Best and Worst Recasting Choices in Movies
Casting the characters can be disturbing; however, if the supporting characters have been recast, then they may easily be accepted as we mostly don’t focus on them a lot. But when major characters are recast, then it may spoil the movie as it becomes difficult to accept the character, how it may perceive as well as match the performance of that character. It is a big challenge for the filmmakers to recast the character as it makes it popular or drags it down. The movie industry has witnessed several iconic recasts, for the better and worse alike. Here are the best and the worst recasting choices made in movies.
Best
1. War Machine – Don Cheadle (Iron Man)
In the first part of the Iron Man, Terence Howard was playing the character of Rhodes. His performance was not at all bad, but in Iron Man 2, Don Cheadle played the character of War Machine. It was not famous at that time, but War Machine became the mainstay of the MCU in various films and appeared against Thanos in the Endgame. The reason for the rejection to come back to the character because of the pay dispute. Although we can surely concur that Don Cheadle has been great in the character of War Machine.
2. Vito Corleone – Robert De Niro
It will be undoubtedly a big risk for the filmmakers to recast the role of Marlon Brando and the iconic role of Vito Corleone in the Godfather. However, this is what happened in Godfather Part 2. The director Francis Ford Coppola cast Robert de Niro in the character of young Vito Corleone. This character helps the high reputation of cement de Niro.
3. Hulk/ Bruce Banner – Mark Ruffalo
Ed Norton played the character of the Hulk and Bruce Banner in Incredible Hulk in 2008. The reason for such a decision is that the studio wants the actor who can work well with other actors in MCU. However, Ed Norton’s team discussed that the choice of recasting was based on money. Ed Norton is an amazing actor, and no one can refuse that how great is Mark Ruffalo in the character of Hulk.
Worst
1. Batman/ Bruce Wayne – George Clooney
The character of Batman was recast before George Clooney took over the role, but because of the reality that Batman Forever is the improved movie, Val Kilmer will not be on the list. It will surely be challenging to make the character of Batman wearing the rubber suit so that it must be unfair for Clooney to comprise him on the list that is not at all his fault. His performance in the role of Batman was not at all appreciating, but the part of Bruce Wayne was terrific.
2. Clarice Starling – Julliane Moore
Silence of the Lambs is one of the best films of the ’90s, because of the success, the movie studio wants to make more films in the franchise. Although they cannot influence Jodie Foster to repeat her character as the Clarice Starling, so Julliane Moore has been cast in character for the sequel. Moore has done her best in character, but it didn’t match the performance of Jodie Foster. And it said that Hannibal is the overall worst movie.
3. Harvey Dent/ Two-Face – Tommy Lee Jones
Tim Burton performed the character of Harvey Dent with Billy Dee Williams in Batman 1989, which was planned to turn it into two faces. Although when Burton lost role as the director of Batman Forever, then the studio decides to change Williams with Tommy Lee Jones. Tommy Lee Jones has taken the character overboard as Dent, but it would have been interesting if William Dee Williams played the character.
