How to Install macOS Catalina on Separate Partition

Well, disk partition means dividing your Mac hard drive space into different sections, which allow users to access two different OS. Effective Steps to Create a New Partition on your Mac
  • On your Mac, open the Finder window.
  • Go to the Applications folder.
  • Now, scroll down and tap on the Utility folder to open it.
  • Select and launch the Disk Utility
  • Choose the hard drive in the disk utility window from the sidebar
  • Make sure to have at least 50 GB space for the new partition.
  • Find the blue bar to check the storage.
  • Afterward, tap on the Partition tab
  • Click on the plus button available under the pie chart
  • Type the Name of the new Partition
  • Go to the Format field and choose APFS.
  • Now, go to the Mac OS extended.
  • It will change it to APFS automatically during installation.
  • Select the Size field and enter the size in gigabytes.
  • Tap on the Apply button and click on the Partition to confirm the process.
How to download the Catalina?
There are two methods available that you can utilize depending on the macOS version you are using. In case you are using the macOS 10.14 Mojave, then it is recommended to download it from the software update. Otherwise, you can choose another option i.e., downloading the Catalina from the Mac App Store. So, follow the following methods and download it on your system.
Download Catalina through Software Update
  • Go to Mac’s dock and choose the Application folder
  • Click on the System Preferences
  • Select Software update
  • Now, your system initiates a process to check for updates.
  • If any update is available, then a panel will appear on your screen showing macOS 10.15 Catalina.
  • Tap on Update Now to start the process.
  • At last, sit tight and wait for a while until the downloading process wraps up.

Download Catalina through the Mac App Store
  • Go to the application folder and tap to open the Mac app store.
  • Look for macOS.
  • By doing such, you will see the macOS Catalina option.
  • Choose the best match and tap on the Get button.
  • To confirm the downloading process, type your Apple ID and password.
  • Now, wait until the downloading finishes up.
Steps to Install Catalina on New Partition
  • Once you download the Catalina on your system, it will start automatically.

  • Make sure to choose the new Partition to install the Catalina.

  • Right-click on the macOs 10.15 installer.
  • Choose Show Package Contents.
  • Tap on the Content and then select Resources available on the installer package.
  • Press and drag the createinstallmedia file into the Terminal command prompt window.
  • In the terminal window, type Applications/Install/macOS/Catalina.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia—volume/volumes
  • Choose your partition drive.
  • Enter your Administrator password and enter Y to confirm the process.
  • Lastly, restart your Mac to complete the installation procedure.
Simple and Easy Way to Switch Between partitions
  • Tap on the Application folder to launch the System and preferences option.
  • Choose the Startup Disk.
  • Tap on the Lock icon available on the left-bottom side of the screen.
  • Type your system admin password and hit Okay to confirm it
  • Choose the partition drive you want to access.
  • Now, restart the system to switch.
  • Hold the Option key to activate the manager when powering the Mac.
  • Launch the desired partition.
